New Sony Ericsson G-Series G700i & G900i Cell Phones Rumoured to Drop in Days

If rumours presently circulating the interweb as to be believed – and we see no reason as to why they would prove unfounded – Sony Ericsson see poised to drop a new range of G-Series cell phones, consisting of two models – the G700i and G900i - on or around February 10th.

Of the few details known concerning Sony Ericsson’s new G-Series it’s believed that the lower-end G700i (codenamed ‘Josephine’) will feature a 2.6” TFT screen and 3.2 megapixel camera whilst the G900i (codenamed ‘Tyra’), whilst also sporting a 2.6” TFT screen, will feature a 5 megapixel camera and WLAN – though at the time of writing we are unable to establish whether either will boast touchscreen capabilities comparable to that utilised by the new W960i smartphone.

Rest assured that we’ll post an update with full specifications concerning both models the moment it becomes available.

Following on from the news concerning LG’s new LG-KF510 ultra slim slider cell phone and Sony Ericsson’s new G-Series G700i and G900i cell phones Samsung are poised to release full details concerning their new Soul cell phone – featuring ‘Magic Touch’ contextual touchscreen – at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Of the few details that are known about Samsung’s 3G Soul one of the most interesting is the incorporation of a mini context sensitive touchscreen referred to as ‘Magic Touch’ which will display navigational icons related to whatever mode the Soul is currently in – for instance, a set of media controls when in music mode – thus allowing the Soul to be role adaptive whilst cutting down on unnecessary clutter. And, interestingly, it’s also being reported that the UI can be themed – though quite to what extent presently remains unclear.

The laptop market has grown and matured over the last several years, and demand has built up steadily. Manufacturers have taken every measure to ensure they offer the largest possible range for virtually any kind of consumer. Now while consumer choice is always a good thing, it’s a different matter when the choice becomes just too bewildering and confusing for the average human being.

Permit me to explain. I feel there's just too much choice available now and not enough clear differentiation in products based on actual performance. For example, take Sony’s VAIO range of laptops. This year alone the company introduced over 50 new models with near identical specs and different covers – from 'nature themes' to dedications to obscure artists that no one has heard of.

The same trend can be observed in products from Lenovo, Dell and HP – Dell with its Inspiron range, Lenovo with the 3000 range, and HP with its 6x/9x range of machines.

With that rant out of the way, let’s examine the product in hand – the Lenovo 3000 Y410 (quite a mouthful, eh?) The company says this is a multimedia powerhouse. Is this true or does the 3000 Y410 fall into the same quagmire as others with tall claims and no show? Let’s find out.

Sony Ericsson has always managed to neatly combine digital photography and/or music players with its mobile handsets. Typically the K850i should be no exception, but here’s what I found out.

Form Factor
The K850i incorporates a partly touchscreen-like display. Three nodes at the bottom of the 2.2 inch display (240 x 320 pixels, 262K colors) are the three points that are touch-sensitive. The keypad is a bit odd with squarish protruding keys. As for navigation, the blue areas around 2 and 5 are slightly raised to serve as navigation points, and the center touch-sensitive area at the bottom is the Select key. There also two pairs of dedicated keys on either side, above the keypad, for taking calls, shortcuts, a cancel key, and ending calls.

One one side, at the top, are the volume/zoom keys. Below is a switch for the camera for Still, Video and Gallery. Alongside that is a dedicated camera key that has a power key only for the camera. At the rear is the 5 megapixel camera with a Xenon flash.

Wondering where you shove your SIM? Though the battery compartment is fully sealed, at the bottom of the phone is a panel that pops open to reveal a hot-swap SIM card slot as well as an M2 card slot. Neat! Above this panel is the charging/earphone port.

Nokia Rolls Out the 6110 Navigator

Nokia has just launched its GPS-enabled 6110 Navigator. Did the company hold a boring old press event with handouts to announce the fact? No sirree – what Nokia did was to arrange a kind of treasure hunt through the southern extremity of the great, yet terribly crowded, city of Mumbai!

This is how it went: we were divided into groups and provided with a Toyota Innova, a dedicated driver who wasn’t allowed to go in any direction except the one we told him to, a Nokia rep with a 6110 Navigator, and a few snacks. Loaded with these essentials we were sent on a wild ride through south Mumbai to gather clues to lead us to subsequent destinations. The Navigator, of course, was meant to guide us along.

It was no easy task considering we’d be disqualified if were to use the city’s best way of navigation i.e. asking the man on the street. And I don’t need to tell you about the traffic in Mumbai; you can well imagine why getting around quickly was impossible. In other words, we didn’t win – but hey, I got to put the Navigator through its paces and that’s what really counts. NOT! On the plus side, the weather in Mumbai being what it is these days, I didn't sweat too much.

The 6110 Navigator is an easy-to-use GPS-enabled handset. GPS may be its USP, but it’s also equipped with some pretty decent features. These include a 2 megapixel camera, microSD support, USB v2.0 (mini USB), Bluetooth with A2DP profile, music player, and stereo FM radio.

This 3G-, HSDPA-enabled slider also supports EDGE. A secondary camera located above its 2.2 inch TFT display (240 x 320 pixels, 16M colors) comes in handy for video calls. As for the GPS, maps of eight Indian cities are included, and are really quite detailed.

The device is available off the shelf for around Rs 14,250 with bill and warranty. Expect a detailed review from us soon!

The camera is built for the casual point-and-shoot audience. It does feature a half-baked manual mode, but the limited options and lack of manual focus make it a pointless feature. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing – the NV15 has a well-defined audience and the features cater perfectly to it.

The most attractive thing about the design is a touch-sensitive button array system that makes navigation a breeze. In case you didn't know, the buttons are located to the right at the bottom of the screen, and their function changes according to the indicators on the screen. It may feel a bit tricky at first, but after a minute you'll appreciate its simplicity over a regular camera navigation system.

Hot! - iPhone Doesn’t Send IMEI Information to Apple!

Yes… German site Heise Online has tested Hackint0sh user XianLi’s claims about the iPhone sending its IMEI to Apple while accessing the web. According to Heise and other sources, this is not true:

While the code says “IMEI,” which stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity, it seems that the actual IMEI is not transmitted. Using a sniffer, Heise says they were able to get the information that the applications are actually sending. The strings aren’t the same as the test iPhone’s IMEI and, in fact, each application sends its own unique code.

According to further testing by Rene at blog docpool, these IDs are identical in all iPhones he has tried. The most plausible explanation: the codes could be just application identifiers. So.. Thats all… Mystery Solved over here!

Microsoft Launched the 80GB Zune Media Player on Tuesday and it has sold out across the whole web the dismay of online shoppers and the delight of the world’s largest software maker.

Amazon told customers via its message board that their preordered devices for November 13 shipping would not be sent for 10 more days.

While web retailers have 4GB and 8GB versions of the second-generation Zunes in stock, the 80GB music player is not available on Amazon, Best Buy or Circuit City’s websites.

Microsoft said it prioritized the manufacture of the smaller Zune 4 and Zune 8 devices, and that more of the 80GB version should be on shelves, both physical and virtual, in the next 10-14 days.

Rumors of a manufacturing delay spread across consumer electronics blogs this week.

“I think they were already probably a little later than they would like to be, given Apple’s iPod announcement of a new line of the market-leading devices in September,” said Matt Rosoff, an analyst at the independent research group Directions on Microsoft. “They probably wanted to get anything out the door as soon as they could.”

Sony Is Taking Pre-Orders For The Super-Slim XEL-1 OLED TV

The Super-Slim XEL-1 OLED TV is not due for release until around the 1st December but as from today you can now pre-order this TV.

But sadly to say this is only the case in Japan but sony are hopeful for a US release date soon.

This TV will cost you ¥200,000 which is about $1,800 for 11-inches of set that will only last about 30,000 hours that is less than that of an LCD.

Fujitsu Introduced 320GB notebook Hard-drive

Fujitsu Tuesday formally launched its MHZ2 BH series of notebook hard-drives, the largest of its Features is power consumption reduced, and storage capacity reached 320GB.

Our Staff just reviewed the New Zune 80GB, we have found that it is fully ready to take down the iPod in the Music Category. This new Zune sports some nice upgrades over the first generation Zune including more Wi-Fi capabilities, smaller size, podcast support, and larger LCD screen. Microsoft is getting closer and closer to Apple’s reign as king of the portable media devices or are they really? Microsoft introduced their tool called Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulater Yesterday, Who mimics the behavior of HD DVD content in a virtual environment before having to burn data, which allows more efficient monitoring and troubleshooting content and lower development costs.

Also, The Emulator allows film studios and disc authoring companies to model the behaviour of HD DVD disc content, including encoded video and HDi interactivity, in a virtual environment before committing to burning a single HD DVD disc.

Creative ups Zen memory to 32GB

Creative Zen has expanded its range of compact flash-based media players pocket with a 32GB model. The 83 X 55 X 12mm Zen-reviewed here - sports a 2.5in, 320 x 240, 16.7-color screen and the ability to play MP3, AAC and WMA music files, as well as MPEG 4, WMV and DivX, and JPEG photos.

There is an FM radio on board. When the player was launched in August, just before the introduction of Apple \ ‘third generation iPod Nano, reviewed here, the gadget is available with a choice of 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of storage contents with a 16GB model available in some territories, such as the United States.

The new model doubles the capacity of the latter model, but it does not know if the price will double too. The 16GB version costs $ 250 and 200 books in the USA and UK, but prices have not yet been revealed.

Still, there is hope that the high capcity Zen won’t carry a high price: it costs ¥39,800 in Japan, just 21 per cent more than the ¥32,800 16GB model. The 32GB Zen is expected mid-December.

ViewSonic has increased their VA series count by three new budget monitors.According to the company, “the VA Series of displays deliver the features and performance to make the most of a customer’s technology budget.” The 17-inch VA1716w ($209) features 1440x900 resolution, 250 cd/m2 brightness, and 500:1 contrast ratio. The 19-inch VA1916w ($229) comes with 1440x900 resolution, 2000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response times and 300 nits of brightness.Another 19" display VA916 ($239) includes 4:3 aspect ratio, 1280x1024 resolution, and same other specs as it's 19-inch sibling. Here is iphone dock with bluetooth headphone charging. Previously this was leaked information when guys from Gizmodo said that this was different from the one Apple showed at MacWorld. But now its all clear.One can notice that there are two cables going into that iPhone connector, though its not sure what they're for. Samsung starts to sell 64GB flash drives
Samsung rolls out its highest capacity 1.8″ flash SSD. Back in March, Samsung announced its 64GB flash Solid State Disk (SSD). The 1.8″ unit promised read speeds of 65MB/sec and write speeds of 45MB/sec. Samsung today revealed that it has started mass production of its new drive. The 64GB SSD uses 64 eight gigabit single-level cell (SLC) flash memory chips which are built on a 51 nanometer manufacturing process. “We see sharply increasing interest in SSDs among OEMs worldwide amid a growing push to launch premium SSD-based notebooks, particularly in the ultra-mobile category,” said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.Samsung’s 64GB SSD will likely appear at online retailers and inside ultra-portable notebooks (and UMPCs) within the coming weeks and months. SSDs have the advantage of low power consumption, low weight, durability, silent operation and high performance. These advantages are expected to allow SSDs to account for 29 percent of ultra-portable notebooks and 25 percent of mainstream notebooks according to iSuppli. The benefits afforded by SSDs are offset by one major deficit: pricing. 1.8″ SSD are currently around five times more expensive than their 1.8″ HDD counterparts. By the year 2010, that differential is expected to only drop to three times as expensive. For those that simply can’t wait for the 1.8” 64GB SSDs to arrive, the older and slower 32GB version (53MB/sec reads, 30MB/sec writes) is available online for the princely sum of $529.
